The story of Microtech Knives begins in 1993, within the modest confines of an apartment in Vero Beach, Florida. Anthony and Susan Marfione, driven by a shared passion for knifemaking, laid the foundation for what would become one of the leading names in the knife industry. Anthony, a skilled craftsman with a background in tool and die making, meticulously crafted the very first knife prototypes in their apartment. This humble beginning soon necessitated a move to a storage shed as their operations began to outgrow their living space.
Microtech's Rise: From U.D.T. to Ultratech
In 1994, Microtech was officially established, marking a significant milestone in the Marfione's journey. The first knife produced under the Microtech banner was the U.D.T. (Underwater Demolition Team), designed specifically for underwater use. This model exemplified Microtech’s commitment to creating high-quality American-made knives.
The following year, Microtech introduced the H.A.L.O. (High Altitude Low Opening) automatic knife, quickly gaining acclaim for its reliable deployment mechanism. Its feature in the September 1995 issue of Fighting Knives Magazine solidified Microtech's reputation as an innovator in the industry.
Microtech’s early success spurred rapid growth. By the late 1990s, the company had moved from the storage shed to larger facilities to accommodate increasing demand. In 1998, Microtech received Blade Magazine’s “Manufacturing Quality” award, a recognition of their dedication to quality. This award was followed by the introduction of the Ultratech in 1999, which became one of Microtech’s most popular and beloved models.

Microtech's Evolution: From Special Forces Knives to Firearms and Beyond
The early 2000s saw continued innovation and expansion. In 2004, Microtech's CURRAHEE knife was designed for and distributed to U.S. Special Operation Forces, marking a significant achievement for the company. However, in 2005, the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina prompted a relocation of Microtech’s headquarters to Bradford, Pennsylvania, where they continued to grow and innovate.
In 2007, Microtech expanded into firearms with the establishment of Microtech Small Arms Research (MSAR), which engineered the STG-556, an American-made version of the Steyr AUG. This move made Microtech the first knife company to establish a firearms division. However, MSAR was closed in 2015 to allow Microtech to focus more on its core business of making knives.

Microtech's Award Winning Legacy
Throughout the years, Microtech has been recognized with numerous awards for its innovative designs. In 2011, the Microtech Select Fire won the “Most Innovative Design” award at Blade Show. The following year, the SOCOM Delta won “American Made Knife of the Year,” and in collaboration with Mick Strider, Microtech created the D.O.C. (Death on Contact), which won “Collaboration of the Year” and “Most Innovative American Design” in 2013.
Microtech celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2014 by expanding with a second facility near Asheville, North Carolina, allowing for increased production and continued innovation. In 2017, they released the Stitch, a renowned collaboration with Borka Blades. By 2019, Microtech took home the “American-Made Knife of the Year” award at Blade Show, underscoring their ongoing commitment to excellence.

Crafting American-Made Excellence Since 1993
Today, Microtech is headquartered in Mills River, North Carolina, and continues to operate with the same mission that began in 1993: to create the best knives possible. Anthony Marfione’s son, Sean, now works alongside his father, ensuring that the legacy of innovation and quality continues.
Microtech takes immense pride in crafting all their knives using the finest materials entirely within the United States, supporting the American economy and ensuring strict quality control throughout the production process. Each knife undergoes meticulous hand assembly, solidifying Microtech’s reputation for exceptional craftsmanship and attention to detail.

Microtech’s journey from a small apartment operation to a leading name in the knife industry is a reflection of the power of dedication, innovation, and a family's unwavering passion. Their commitment to creating high-quality, functional knives has earned them a loyal following among collectors, enthusiasts, and users worldwide. As they continue to push boundaries and explore new design possibilities, Microtech’s story promises to remain as captivating and sharp as the very blades they forge.
