Kershaw Launch 12 Review

Published: March 25th, 2025

The Launch 12, released by Kershaw in 2020, is a compact automatic knife designed by knife maker Matt Diskin. This model is a smaller version of the popular Kershaw Launch 8, maintaining the classic stiletto-inspired look while offering a practical everyday carry size. Manufactured in the USA, the Launch 12 combines excellent materials, reliable performance, and sleek looks to create a well-rounded automatic knife.

The Kershaw Launch 12 features a 2.4-inch spear point blade made from CPM-154 steel. The stonewashed finish gives the blade a rugged, understated appearance that effectively hides wear from daily use. The plain edge blade excels in precision cutting tasks, making it suitable for a wide range of everyday activities. The spear point shape also provides impressive piercing ability, enhancing the knife’s practicality in various cutting situations.

Constructed from durable 6061-T6 aluminum, the handle of the Launch 12 is both lightweight and resilient. Weighing only 1.9 ounces, this knife feels virtually weightless in the pocket. The handle is anodized for extra protection and comes in various colors, including black, blue, gray, and teal, allowing users to select a style that suits their preferences. What truly elevates the design is the carbon fiber insert along the handle’s center, providing a sophisticated contrast against the anodized aluminum. This carbon fiber detail not only enhances the knife’s look but improves grip for better handling during use.

The Launch 12’s design offers a blend of elegance and practicality. With a handle length of 3.7 inches and an overall length of 6.2 inches, it provides a comfortable grip despite its compact size. The push-button automatic mechanism ensures fast, reliable, and snappy deployment, which feels satisfying and precise with every press. The same button functions as the lock, securing the blade firmly when open. Its sleek construction is further complemented by black oxide steel hardware, including the pivot nut and screws, which seamlessly blend into the knife’s overall dark theme.

Kershaw designed the Launch 12 with everyday carry convenience in mind. The reversible pocket clip allows for right or left-handed tip-up carry, enhancing accessibility for all users. The pocket clip itself features a black Teflon finish, which not only adds to the knife’s minimalist aesthetic but also provides additional corrosion resistance. With its lightweight construction and compact design, the knife is easy to carry discreetly in a pocket or clipped onto clothing.
